The magnificent underwater scenery of the island of Rangiroa inspires raptures of the deep. But another nod to its marine riches is the names of the wines produced by the Dominique Auroy vinyard, off the village of Avatoru, in the Tuamotu Archipelago: White Reef, Reef Clos, Rosé nacarat and other sweet white wines. An original land to grow grapes, far from usual winemaking territories! Several years of work and experimentation were necessary to acclimatising the vine stocks.
Today, the vineyard of over eight hectares in the middle of a coconut grove produces two annual harvests (in May and November) and 40,000 bottles a year, all of which age in the cellars.
Accessible by private boat, the domain can be visited and holds wine-tastings. Make a reservation and try these wines structured in flavour by Carignan, Hamburg and Italia Muscat vines, even though they are grown in the midst of the Pacific Ocean! To be enjoyed in moderation, of course.
