Just 40 kilometres south of Lisbon, the small seaside town of Sesimbra is transformed every year in February to enthusiastically celebrate carnival. With its myriad colours and rhythms, this is one of the hottest spots in Portugal. Led by samba schools, who demonstrate their virtuosity through elaborate choreography, the costumed population strolls alongside the floats by the waterfront. After countless rehearsals, the apotheosis comes on the Sunday before Mardi Gras, when nearly 30,000 people are determined to share a good time in a festive spirit!
