Philipsburg: duty-free paradise

What better than a stroll through the centre of Philipsburg, with its trendy boutiques and typical local houses?

Philipsburg, the capital of the Dutch side of the island, is organised around two main streets: Front Street and Back Street. The majority of tourist shops, however, are on Wathey Square. Throughout the city you will find a mixture of traditional colourful houses, small white churches, and modern luxury hotels. The city is especially worth a visit for its duty-free shops.

Between shopping expeditions, however, you can visit the Sint Maarten Museum. Its collections reflect the culture of the island, and the ruins of Fort Amsterdam, in the southeast, which offers a nice view of the bay.

The zoo and botanical garden, which contain more than 80 animal species, are also worth a visit. A tip: do not leave without a bottle of Guavaberry, produced from the Caribbean fruit of the same name mixed with aged rum and cane sugar. The traditional liqueur of Saint Martin, it is absolutely delicious – enjoy in moderation!
