NorthPark Center: where shopping meets art

This visionary shopping centre is both an ode to consumption and a temple of art.

You have just run into Joan Miró, Alexander Calder, Barbara Hepworth, Richard Serra, Donald Judd, Roy Lichtenstein, Anish Kapoor, Richard Deacon, Jeff Koons and others right here in a shopping centre! In 1960, this building was erected on the site of former cotton fields with the objective of presenting the prestigious works collected by Raymond D. Nasher. In the words of this visionary American businessman, real estate magnate and philanthropist, the centre was conceived as an exhibition space: “Each company has a special responsibility to enrich the lives of its customers and the community. It should serve as a catalyst to link art and business for the benefit of all.” Since opening in July 1965, the NorthPark Center has welcomed major American brands and imposed its little revolution. Half a century later, it attracts 26 million visitors a year and is home to the most prestigious international luxury brands (Vuitton, Gucci, Tiffany, Tod's, Ferragamo, Longchamp and as of spring 2019 Saint Laurent), with many more for everyone's budgets.
