Le Grand Boucan

Each year in June, the Grand Boucan carnival enlivens the seaside resort of Saint Gilles les Bains in the commune of Saint Paul.

Since its first edition almost 20 years ago (1997), the Grand Boucan carnival has been attracting thousands to the streets of Saint Gilles les Bains. In 2015, there were 15,000 who came to this festival of costumes, concerts, and spectacles throughout the resort town. The key attraction of the festival is the parade of the giant King Dodo that is walked through downtown to the Roches noires (Black stone) beach where it is burned at nightfall with impressive fireworks overhead. Every year, the identity of the effigy changes and is only revealed at the last minute. This year the carnival will take place on 20 June.
