Austin, live music capital of the world

“Keep Austin Weird”, the unofficial slogan of independent businesses in the capital, evokes the strong character and alternative side of a city that lives to the rhythm of music.

This city of a million people located inland on the edge of the Hill Country region is not only Texas' Silicon Valley, renowned for its high technology. A true hot spot for blues and country music since the 1970s, Austin is a real stronghold of countless festivities as well, where all music genres are played throughout 250 venues, not to mention bars and clubs. Stroll along the old-fashioned facades of 6th Street and you'll see a colourful crowd—cowboys, businessmen, hippies and hipsters. Near Rainey Street, just a stone's throw from the city centre, an old residential area has become a meeting point since the renovation of its bungalows—now full of cocktail bars and lounges, complete with backyards. Every March since 1987, Austin has been hosting South by Southwest (SXSW), one of the world's most renowned festivals celebrating the convergence of music, film and interactive media. Austin, you rock!
